6 levels of vehicle autonomy
- level 0:
- no driving automation, completely manual
- level 1:
- driver assistance:
- cruise control
- adaptive cruise control (keeps car a distance behind the car in front)
- level 2:
- partial driving automation:
- advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS):
- vehicle controls both steering and speed
- human can take control at any time
- Tesla Autopilot is level 2
- level 3:
- conditional driving automation:
- “environmental detection” capabilities
- still requires humans to override – driver must be paying attention
- level 4:
- mostly do not need human interaction
- cars can generally deal with adverse circumstances
- use is limited by regulation
- Waymo is considered level 4 (as of 2020)
- level 5:
- full driving automation
- no human attention needed
- level 5 cars won’t have any human driving controls (steering wheels or pedals)
